After painting our pegboards the time came to put them on the wall!
There were two main structural requirements for hanging our pegboards. First, they had to be mounted to studs in order to support their weight, and the weight of any potential materials we decide to hang on them in the future. Second, they had to be mounted slightly away from the wall so that we could hang pegs from them (hence, pegboard).
To create spacers to separate the pegboard from the wall, we used the bandsaw to cut small 2x3” rectangles out of plywood. Then, we measured and marked on the spacer where we would screw them into the wall, and after using a stud finder to locate 6 studs in the wall, carefully measured where each spacer would be placed. we decided to use 12 spacers, using 2 spacers per stud across the wall (giving even support to the board so it doesn’t flex or wobble anywhere). We then attached each spacer using a drill.
After all 12 wood spacers were placed and screwed into the studs, we painted them black so that they would appear invisible when the pegboard was mounted. If we left them bare you would be able to see light spots on the final product where each spacer was placed behind the pegboard. After letting the black paint dry, we screwed the pegboards to the spacers, and voila! Great ombre pegboard success.
We love how the pegboard delineates the office portion of the room from the bedroom portion, and how the colors create a nice flow across the wall. It was time for a change in this room, and we love how it turned out.
Plus, it made for a really great project! Pegboard from Home Depot is under $20 (and they can cut it to size for you in the store). We used Montana Gold Spray Paint, which is great & a little pricier, but you could easily use tubed acrylic paints and achieve the same goal. All in all, it was a fun, affordable, and useful addition to our house! -Marcus & Kayt
